Notes on “Hospitable”: “Hospitable” is “philoxenos” or a friend of foreigners. It is seen 3 times in the Bible. 1Ti 3:2 it is required, therefore, the overseer to be blameless, a husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, respectable, a friend of strangers, apt to teach, Tit 1:8 but a lover of strangers, a lover of [the] good, sober-minded, righteous, holy, self-controlled, 1Pe 4:9 [be] hospitable to one another, without murmuring; It is worth noting that the first two are from passages described as “Qualifications for Overseers” or “Qualifications for Elders”. I would contend that it is simply what maturing should bring you to. The Peter passage is also for those maturing, so I contend it is consistent. Note also a few verses before: 1Pe 4:4 in which they think it strange—your not running with them to the same excess of wastefulness, slandering [you]— The “strange” is “xenizō” which is the verb form of “xenos” which is foreigner or stranger, as seen in “philoxenos”. My Lady, you are still loved by me! |
